Physical Therapy for Headache Relief

A man sitting on a hospital bed holding onto the sife of is head because of a headache

Pain that occurs in any part of the head is called a headache. Often, an annoying headache is harmless and will resolve on its own. Severe headaches of short or long duration that frequently recur, which affect your ability to perform daily activities and reduce your quality of life, can often be effectively managed or eradicated with physical therapy.

Physical therapy can treat headaches caused by musculoskeletal problems or a multitude of other issues. Different headaches include but are not limited to tension-type, migraine and cluster, secondary headaches from fever or infectious disease, cranial neuralgias, or facial pain.

The Most Common Causes of Headache Pain

Headaches can be caused by a large variety of health conditions, injuries, and illnesses. Problems in the head, neck, or jaw can lead to tension in the muscles at the back of the head and increased pressure on the nerves to the face and head.

Other treatable causes of headache pain include but are not limited to:

  • Disc Pathology
  • Limited Neck Range of Motion
  • Muscle Tension and Tightness
  • Sinus Issues
  • Vascular Flow Restrictions or Abnormalities
  • Concussion or Other Head Injuries
  • Spinal Imbalance
  • Cranial Imbalance
  • Habitual Positional Strain

How Can Physical Therapy Help with Headache Pain?

Physical therapy treatments for headache pain can be effective and work very quickly. These treatments will vary from person to person. Some patients will only need one session, while other patients may need several weeks of therapy to correct the underlying problem and alleviate pain.

Here at Bayside Physical Therapy, our physical therapist will conduct a thorough examination, including a review of your medical history. They will ask specific questions and perform tests to determine the cause of your headaches.

Since each headache may be caused by something unique, each patient is treated differently and will have a customized treatment plan.

Headache treatment methods could include:

  • Manual Therapy of the Spine and Cranium
  • Cervical Traction
  • Heat or Ice Therapy
  • Muscular Releases
  • Muscle Energy Techniques
  • Targeted Stretches
  • Neck and Mid-Back Strengthening
  • Posture Education
  • Respiratory Retraining
  • Soft Tissue Mobilization
  • Spinal Range of Motion
